This is based on a recipe from Chef Paul Prudhomme's Louisiana Kitchen. The main difference is that my version is much lower in fat (Paul calls for two sticks of butter, plus two tablespoons chicken fat, plus an optional four tablespoons additional butter!). The curry has a delicious blend of sweet fruit and hot peppers. It's definitely worth the chopping and long cooking time (45+ minutes). Step 1 : Prepare the first seasoning mix, by combining: • 2 tablespoons curry powder • 1 teaspoon ground red pepper (such as cayenne) • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon • 1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper • 1/2 teaspoon dried basil • 1/4 teaspoon ground coriander Set aside. Step 2 : In a 4 quart pan combine • 2 chopped onions (about 3 cups) • fresh minced hot pepper (5 tablespoons jalapenos OR 1 habanero) • 1 stick of butter or margarine • the seasoning mix (step 1) Cook over high heat until the butter melts (about 5 minutes), stirring

More on the Esperanza Fire

This morning's LA Times had a great map showing the steep terrain the fire fighters are having to deal with in fighting the Esperanza fire. Read the whole article . (may require free login or bugmenot) The Riverside County Sheriff's department is asking the public for tips on the possible arsonists, and officials are "seeking a $100,000 reward for information". (I take it that they haven't yet come up with the money, but they are trying). Science Fun

It's time for another round of the AW Blog Chain ! In the last post, Kelly wrote about kids who make a difference in the world by trying to improve literacy in their communities. Fantastic! I hope more kids find out that reading can be both fun and rewarding. I'd like to suggest that science literacy is as important as reading literacy (literary literacy?). Of course the two go together - a kid with poor reading comprehension is going to have a tough time in all subjects. A problem, though, is that a lot of people think that science is boring or only for geeks or for boys*. Au contraire! Science can be fun. Now, there are lots of computer programs, and web sites and books that are designed to teach science to kids. Personally, I think hands-on learning is much more fun.
