Friday Flower: Nasturtium

Nasturtiums are one of my favorite garden flowers. They are easy to grow from seed and I have nice bushy "dwarf jewel mix" plants happily growing in 10" pots from Walmart. As a bonus, you can use the flowers in salads or as edible garnish - they have a nice peppery flavor.

Pretty photos Peg.

How often do you eat the flowers. Steams, petals or both.

We lived on Brecknock Street when I was a young girl and our next door neighbors were the Harmons. I remember having lunch over there one day and Mrs. Harmon got some nasturtiums from her garden to put on our salads. I was very suspicious for I thought eating flowers must be a very dangerous business. Mrs. Harmon convinced me to try them, however, and even went so far as to show me how to make candied violets and rose petals after lunch. One day I'm going to grow nasty urchins in my garden. (Yup. That's what I called them!)

Bri: the stems aren't so nice - stringy you know. I don't actually use the flowers very often. I'd mostly prefer to admire their beauty. You can try some when you come to visit.

Virginia: Nasty urchins, that makes me smile :-) I've tried candied violets but the combination of the perfume and the sugar was just too much for me to enjoy them.
