Happy Winter Solstice

Today is the shortest day of the year - time to celebrate that the days will be getting longer. Bad Astronomer argues that we should think of this as the winter season's midpoint, rather than its beginning. That's a bit hard for me to agree with when it's just starting to get chilly here (although he is arguing from the astronomical definition of seasons, rather than from a weather-related viewpoint).

NASA's astronomy photo of the day shows the change in the direction of sunrise from winter to summer over a Greek town.
