When I was a girl the Nancy Drew mystery stories were among my favorite books. Nancy was confident and smart, and always caught the crook.
Salon.com has an interesting article about a new book about two of the women who were "Carolyn Keene", the "author" of the Nancy Drew mystery stories: Mildred Wirt Benson, "a hard-charging newspaperwoman from Iowa" and Harriet Stratemeyer Adams, daughter of series creator Edward Stratemeyer. Despite their anonymity, their personalities were incorporated into the character of the "girl sleuth".
