Master Gardeners

The University of California runs a Master Gardener program, in which volunteers are available to help home gardeners with their questions. There are different programs in every California county, with some providing seminars and newsletters in addition to their availabity to answer questions (often via a telephone "hotline").

For example, the Riverside County Master Gardener Program offers a telephone hotline, but also lets people bring in plant samples for assistance. They also have a newsletter (that hasn't been updated in a while). A very useful resource.
