The Improbable Research blog points out a new study by the British Cheese Board demonstrating that eating cheese does not cause nightmares. Earlier the Board sponsored research to develop the "optimal cheese sandwich". Definitely an important finding.
However, the actual effect depended on the type of cheese:

British brie tended to give women nice dreams, such as Jamie Oliver cooking dinner in their kitchen, while the men had odd dreams such as having a drunken conversation with a dog.
