Sometimes non-technical solutions do the job. Mao Zhang of Fontana, CA has received a patent for a system of recycling waste on long space missions: use maggots (fly larvae) to feed on human waste. The maggots could then be ground up and used as food. Sounds like a clever idea - as long as they could bring along some spices to cover up that maggoty flavor.
