The National Institute of Standards and Health has ranked Google's translator #1. Even so, if you enter a word into the translator, you only get one result, even if the word you entered has multiple possible meanings.
Philipp Lenssen of Google Blogscoped suggests using images.google.com to test whether the translation of a particular word is the correct one. Sounds like an easy way for a quick accuracy check.
