I am nerdy enough to go to Usenet newsgroups for interesting discussions on a variaty of topics. Most groups have a FAQ that should be read before entering the discussion.
The FAQ for rec.foods.cooking is especially useful. It includes conversions between US and UK (metric) units, substitutes for a number of ingredients, a glossary of cooking terms and methods, as long list of links to other cooking and food sites, and, of course, frequently asked questions.
(If you are not comfortable with a news reader such as MT-Newswatcher to access Usenet, you can gain access to newsgroups through Google Groups).
