Ernst Haeckel: Evolution's controversial artist

Click on a link for an interesting slide-show essay from Slate about Ernst Haeckel.

Haeckel was a zoologist that discovered (and illustrated) thousands of new species of sea creatures. His discoveries has been overshadowed by his ugly views on "race" and the fact that he fudged the drawings of embryos in his famous "ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny" illustration.

Of course there is a tie in - a movie about Haeckel's life (Proteus) was recently released.
